Two sofas can look identical in a showroom and still age completely differently. Same fabric, same shape, same price tag — one sags within two years, the other stays firm for ten. The difference is almost always the foam inside, and it is the one spec most showrooms never mention.
This guide explains sofa foam density in plain terms: what the numbers mean, which foam belongs where, and how to check it before you pay.
Density vs firmness: the mistake most buyers make
Foam density is how much the foam weighs per cubic metre (kg/m³). In India it is usually written as "32D" or "40D". Density tells you about durability — how long the foam holds its shape.
Firmness is how hard the foam feels when you sit on it. The two are not the same. A low-density foam can be made to feel firm on day one and still break down quickly. That is why "it feels firm in the showroom" tells you almost nothing about how the sofa will feel in year three.
The rule is simple: choose the density for lifespan, then choose the firmness for comfort.
Common foam grades and where each belongs
| Foam | Typical use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 23–28D PU | Backrests, armrests | Soft; fine where there is little load |
| 32D PU | Budget seat cushions | Acceptable, but softens noticeably within a few years |
| 40D PU | Good seat cushions | Holds shape well under daily family use |
| HR foam (40D+) | Premium seats | Springier and longer-lasting; best for heavy daily use |
| Memory foam | Top comfort layer | Contours to the body; used as a thin layer, never alone |
| Rebonded foam | Firm base layer | Very dense; adds support under softer foam |
A well-built seat cushion is usually layered: a firm base, a durable high-density core, and a softer top layer for comfort. A single slab of cheap foam wrapped in thick polyfibre is the most common shortcut in the market.
Why cheap sofas sag
Seat cushions take most of the load, every day, for years. When low-density foam is used there, the cells collapse and do not recover. You get the familiar dip where everyone sits, the fabric wrinkles, and the sofa looks old long before the frame has worn out.
Hyderabad's heat makes this worse — low-grade foam traps heat and breaks down faster in warm conditions. (For fabrics that cope with the climate, see our guide to sofa materials for Hyderabad's humid weather.)
How to check foam before you buy
- Ask for the density in writing. "Good quality foam" is not a spec. A number like 40D or HR 40 is.
- Ask what is in each part. The seat, back and arms should not all use the same foam.
- Unzip a cushion. If you see a thin foam slab wrapped in thick fibre, walk away.
- Press and release. Good foam springs back immediately. Slow or partial recovery means low density.
- Lift the cushion. Higher-density foam is noticeably heavier.
Why a custom sofa lets you choose
With a ready-made sofa, the foam is decided for you — usually to hit a price point. With a custom sofa, you pick the density for each part based on how the sofa will actually be used: a firmer HR seat for a family that sits on it all day, or a softer top layer for a lounge-style piece. Paying a little more for the right seat foam is the single best upgrade you can make to a sofa's lifespan — and buying factory direct instead of from a showroom is how you afford it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best foam density for a sofa seat?
40D PU or HR foam of 40 kg/m³ and above for daily use. 32D works for a lightly used sofa but will soften sooner.
Is higher density foam harder?
Not necessarily. Density measures durability; firmness is a separate property. A high-density foam can be soft or firm depending on how it is made.
What is HR foam?
High-resilience foam — a more open-celled, springier foam that recovers its shape faster and lasts longer than standard PU foam of similar density.
How long does sofa foam last?
Low-density seat foam often sags within 2–3 years of daily use. Good high-density or HR foam holds its shape for many years longer.
Can I replace the foam in my old sofa?
Yes. If the frame is sound, re-foaming the seat cushions is often the cheapest way to make an old sofa comfortable again. Also see our sofa care guide.
