For most Hyderabad bedrooms, a queen size bed is the right answer. It fits a standard 10 x 12 ft master bedroom with room to walk on both sides, sheets are easy to find, and it costs less. Choose a king size bed only if your room is at least 12 ft wide — otherwise you gain 30 cm of mattress and lose the ability to walk past the foot of the bed.
That is the short version. The rest of this guide gives you the exact measurements, the floor-space maths, and the things that actually go wrong — from a workshop that has been building beds in Cherlapalli for years.
Indian bed sizes are not the same as American ones
This trips people up constantly. A "king size bed" in India is not the same object as a king size bed in a US catalogue, and if you buy a mattress or a fitted sheet against the wrong chart, nothing fits.
These are the sizes actually sold in India:
| Size | Inches | Centimetres | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 36 x 75 | 91 x 190 | One adult, child's room, guest room |
| Double | 48 x 75 | 122 x 190 | Two adults at a squeeze, small 1BHK |
| Queen | 60 x 78 | 152 x 198 | Two adults, most Hyderabad master bedrooms |
| King | 72 x 78 | 183 x 198 | Two adults plus a child or pet, larger rooms |
The one number to double-check is length. Indian beds come in 72 in, 75 in and 78 in lengths depending on the maker, and the difference matters twice: once for anyone over about 5 ft 10 in, and again when you buy fitted sheets. Ask for the length in inches before you order, and buy bedding to that number rather than to the label on the box.
So what is the actual difference between king and queen?
Twelve inches of width. That is the whole thing — 30 cm, split between two people, or about 15 cm each. Length is identical at 78 in. Everything else in the decision follows from what those twelve inches cost you in floor space.
The room test: measure before you choose
This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that causes returns.
You need a walkway on both sides of the bed and at the foot. Sixty centimetres (2 ft) is the minimum you can move through without turning sideways. Seventy-five centimetres is comfortable, and you need closer to 90 cm on any side where a wardrobe door or a drawer has to open.
So the arithmetic is: bed width + 60 cm + 60 cm = the minimum room width.
| Room width | What fits |
|---|---|
| Under 9 ft | Double, or a queen against one wall with access on one side only |
| 9-10 ft | Queen, tight but workable |
| 10-11 ft | Queen comfortably, or a king with narrow walkways |
| 12 ft and above | King comfortably |
Two Hyderabad-specific things to add to that. First, check which way your wardrobe opens — a sliding wardrobe needs no clearance, but hinged shutters need 60 cm of swing that the bed cannot occupy. Second, measure the doorway, the lift and the staircase turn, not just the bedroom. A king headboard is a wide, rigid object, and getting it into a fourth-floor flat in Kukatpally is a real constraint. Ask whether the frame and headboard can be delivered knocked down and assembled in the room — ours can.
King vs queen, head to head
| Queen (60 x 78 in) | King (72 x 78 in) | |
|---|---|---|
| Space per person | 30 in each | 36 in each |
| Minimum room width | About 9 ft | About 10 ft, 12 ft to be comfortable |
| Bedding availability | Widest choice, cheapest | Fewer options, costs more |
| Cost | Lower frame and mattress cost | Higher on both |
| Moving it in | Usually straightforward | Check doors, lift and stair turns |
| Best for | Most couples, most master bedrooms | Co-sleeping with a child, taller or restless sleepers |
The honest summary: if a child or a dog joins you at night, or one of you sleeps restlessly, the extra twelve inches genuinely changes how well you sleep. If neither is true, that money buys you more in a better mattress than in a wider frame.
Storage bed, or plain platform?
In a Hyderabad flat, storage under the bed is usually worth more than the extra width. Three options:
- Hydraulic lift-up storage. The whole mattress platform lifts on gas struts, giving you one large box the size of the bed. Best for bulky, seasonal things — quilts, suitcases, spare bedding. The struts are the part that fails on cheap beds, so ask what grade is fitted and whether they can be replaced later.
- Drawer storage. Two or four drawers in the base. Better for everyday items because you are not lifting a mattress to reach them, but the drawers need floor clearance to pull out, so they do not suit a bed pushed into a corner.
- No storage. Lighter, cheaper, and the frame lasts longer because there is less hardware to fail. Sensible if you already have wardrobes — see our storage and wardrobes options.
One thing to know about lift-up storage in this climate: a sealed box under a bed does not breathe. Line it, keep the bedding dry when you put it away, and open it occasionally during the monsoon. The same humidity logic that governs upholstery applies here — we cover it in detail in our guide to materials for Hyderabad's humid weather.
What to check in the frame
A bed is judged on the parts you cannot see once it is made up. In order of how often they cause problems:
The timber
Poorly seasoned wood keeps moving after it is built. It absorbs moisture through the monsoon, dries out in the summer, and the joints work loose — which is where a creaking bed comes from. Properly seasoned hardwood, jointed rather than stapled, stays quiet. Ask what the frame is made of, and be specific: "wooden bed" can mean solid hardwood, engineered board, or a plywood box with a veneer.
The slats and the centre support
Any bed 60 in or wider needs a centre rail with legs to the floor. Without it the slats bow under load and the mattress develops a dip down the middle within a couple of years. On a king this is not optional. Check that the slats are close-spaced too — wide gaps shorten the life of a foam mattress.
The headboard
If it is upholstered, the foam density decides whether it still looks sharp in year five or goes soft and lumpy where everyone leans. This is the easiest place for a maker to save money invisibly. Our approach to both is on the materials and specifications page.
When neither size is right, change the size
This is the part a showroom cannot offer you. We manufacture our own beds at our factory in Cherlapalli, so the dimensions are a decision rather than a constraint.
If your room is 11 ft wide, a 66 in bed gives you more sleeping space than a queen while keeping a real walkway on both sides — a size no retailer stocks. If your mattress is already 75 in long, we build the frame to 75 in so there is no gap at the foot. If the room has a beam, a bay or an odd corner, the bed is built around it.
You can also specify the headboard height, the fabric or leather, the foam density, and whether it has storage. Browse the bed range, look at how we build, or see the custom furniture options.
Buying direct from the workshop also removes the retail markup — the same reason our custom sofas start around ₹45,000 and typically save about ₹20,000 against a comparable showroom piece. Come and see a frame before it is upholstered if you want to judge it properly: plan a factory visit, Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 19:30.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a king size and queen size bed in India?
Width. An Indian queen is 60 x 78 in (152 x 198 cm) and an Indian king is 72 x 78 in (183 x 198 cm). The length is the same; the king is twelve inches wider.
What room size do I need for a king size bed?
At least 10 ft wide to fit it at all, and 12 ft to walk comfortably on both sides. Below that, a queen will make the room work better.
Is an Indian king size bed the same as a US king?
No. A US king is 76 x 80 in, wider and longer than the Indian 72 x 78 in. Buy mattresses and bedding against Indian measurements, and always confirm the length in inches.
Is a hydraulic storage bed a good idea?
Yes for bulky seasonal storage, provided the gas struts are decent quality and replaceable. For things you need daily, drawers are less effort because you are not lifting the mattress each time.
Can I get a bed made to a size that is not standard?
Yes. Because we manufacture rather than resell, we build to your room and to your existing mattress. Send us the room measurements and we will quote against them.
Why does my bed creak?
Usually joints that have loosened because the timber was not properly seasoned, or a missing centre support letting the frame flex. Both are build problems, not maintenance problems.
