Design Democracy 2026 Hyderabad: A Visitor's Guide

Design Democracy 2026 runs from 18 to 20 September 2026 at the HITEX Exhibition Centre in Hyderabad. It is the festival's fourth edition, and the organisers list over 200 design brands and more than 150 speakers across four halls.

We are not exhibiting this year. We build sofas and beds about an hour across the city in Cherlapalli, and we are going as visitors like everyone else. So this is not a stand announcement — it is the guide we would want if we were walking in cold: what is actually on, who is speaking, and how to tell a well-built piece of furniture from an expensive-looking one while standing in front of it.

What is on the floor

The exhibition is split across four named halls — Canvas, Muse, Atelier and Alchemy — with a separate Gourmet Zone. Alongside the brand stands, this edition runs several curated exhibitions:

  • Museum of Telangana, curated by Supraja Rao of Design House.
  • Gallery of Sustainability, curated by Jasem Pirani and Huzefa Rangwala of MuseLab.
  • Precious Objects, curated by Monika Choudhary, Founding Partner & Chief Development Officer, and Sarah Choudhary, Director Interior Commercial, of ZHCollective | Habitat Architects.
  • The Art Edit, curated by Anish Gawande with Sakshi Art Gallery.
  • The Fabric of Design, featuring Gaurang Shah, Divani and Yavi.

There are also large-scale outdoor installations, so leave time before you go inside.

Who is speaking

The talks run as DD Talks and DD Focus — keynotes and panels across the three days. Among the architects and designers announced so far:

  • Sandeep Khosla of Khosla Associates, the Bengaluru architecture and interiors practice.
  • Alfaz Miller, founder of ABM Architects.
  • Ankon Mitra, architect, landscape designer and sculptor, known for folded-form work.
  • Arjun Bahl, co-founder of the St+art India Foundation, behind much of the public street-art work in Indian cities.
  • Dr. Jagan Shah, architect and urbanist.
  • Ravinder Reddy and Sussanne Khan.

That is the publicly announced shortlist at the time of writing, out of a programme the organisers put at 150+ speakers. The full schedule is worth checking on the official site the week of the show, because session times move.

How to judge furniture while standing in front of it

This is the part we can actually help with. A show floor is designed to sell you on styling — good lighting, styled vignettes, nothing sat on for five years. Everything that determines whether a sofa is still good in year eight is hidden under the fabric. Here is how to get at it in ninety seconds.

Lift one end

Pick up a corner of the sofa. A well-made frame in seasoned hardwood has real weight. If a three-seater lifts easily, the frame is probably softwood or engineered board, and it will not hold its shape once a family uses it daily.

Press the arm, not the seat

Everyone presses the seat. Press the top of the arm instead, firmly. You should feel dense foam over a solid edge. If your thumb finds a hard rail immediately under a thin skin of foam, that arm will feel cheap every day for a decade. If it sinks with no resistance at all, the foam is low-density and will collapse.

Look underneath

Get low and look under the frame. You are checking for jointed and dowelled corners rather than a few staples, and for a dust cover that is fitted rather than stapled on in a hurry. Makers who are proud of the joinery leave it visible. Ask to see the inside of a cushion cover too — a good maker will unzip one for you without hesitating.

Ask for the foam density, in numbers

"High-density foam" is a marketing phrase, not a specification. Ask what density, in kg/m³, is used in the seat, and whether it is different from the back. If nobody on the stand can answer, that tells you something. We publish ours on our materials and specifications page.

Check the fabric against your actual climate

Hyderabad's monsoon is hard on upholstery, and a show floor in September tells you nothing about how a fabric behaves in August. Natural fibres like linen and pure cotton hold moisture; polyester and poly-blend weaves do not. We wrote the full breakdown in our guide to the best sofa materials for Hyderabad's humid weather.

Measure, then measure the doorway

Carry your room dimensions. Nearly every regret we hear about a piece bought at a show is a size problem, not a taste problem — a sofa that swallows the room, or a headboard that will not turn the stairwell. Our bed size guide has the clearance arithmetic, and it works the same way for sofas.

Questions worth asking any exhibitor

  • Who actually manufactures this — you, or a third party?
  • What timber is the frame, and was it seasoned?
  • What foam density is in the seat?
  • Webbing or serpentine springs under the cushions?
  • Can I change the dimensions, or only the fabric?
  • What is the lead time, and what happens if it does not fit through my door?
  • Who repairs it in three years, and are parts available then?
  • Is this the display price or the order price?

The answers separate manufacturers from resellers quickly. A reseller will not know the foam density because they never specified it.

Practical notes

HITEX is in Kothaguda, west Hyderabad, near the Hitec City and Gachibowli corridor — easy from Madhapur or Kondapur, a longer run from the eastern suburbs. Three days across four halls is a lot of floor; wear shoes you can stand in. Photograph the label on anything you like along with the piece itself, because stand numbers blur together by the second hall. And if you are buying rather than browsing, go on a weekday morning when the stands are quiet enough to have the conversation above.

If you want to see furniture actually being made

A show floor shows you finished objects. It cannot show you the frame before it is covered, which is the part that decides how long the piece lasts.

Our workshop in Cherlapalli is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 19:30, and you are welcome to walk through it — timber store, foam cutting, upholstery, all of it. Come with the questions above and use them on us. You can see how we build first, browse the sofa range or the bed range, or plan a visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where is Design Democracy 2026?

18 to 20 September 2026, at the HITEX Exhibition Centre, Izzatnagar, Kothaguda, Hyderabad 500084. It is the fourth edition.

How do I get passes?

Through the official Design Democracy website. We are not the organisers and do not handle registration, so check designdemocracy.in for current pass types and timings.

What is there to see besides brand stands?

Four halls — Canvas, Muse, Atelier and Alchemy — plus curated exhibitions including Museum of Telangana, Gallery of Sustainability, Precious Objects, The Art Edit and The Fabric of Design, outdoor installations, a Gourmet Zone, and the DD Talks and DD Focus speaker programme.

Is KMF Living exhibiting at Design Democracy 2026?

No. We are not taking a stand this year. Our workshop in Cherlapalli is open through the week if you would like to see how the furniture is made instead.

Is it worth going if I am furnishing one home rather than working in the trade?

Yes, if you go with measurements and a list of questions. Seeing thirty sofas in an afternoon calibrates your eye faster than months of scrolling. Just do not buy on the first pass.
