A sofa cum bed is worth buying when you genuinely need the second function — a guest bed a few nights a month, or a bed every night in a 1BHK. What decides whether you are still happy with it in year three is the mechanism, not the fabric. That is the part showrooms rarely explain and listings never mention.
We manufacture sofas and beds in Cherlapalli, Hyderabad, so we see these come back for repair. Here is what actually matters.
Sofa cum bed, sofa come bed, sofa bed — all the same thing
Worth clearing up, because the spelling varies more than the product does. "Sofa cum bed" is the standard Indian retail term, from the Latin cum meaning "combined with". Most people type it as sofa come bed or sofa kam bed, and a few search for a sofa bed or a bed cum sofa. They all describe the same object: seating that converts into a sleeping surface.
A diwan is a different thing — a single-size daybed that does not convert. It just is what it is, day and night.
The three mechanisms, and which one to pick
Nearly every sofa cum bed sold in India uses one of three systems. This is the single most important choice you will make.
| Type | How it works | Sleeps | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click-clack | The backrest drops flat, level with the seat | Firm, one surface | Occasional guests, tight budgets, small rooms |
| Pull-out / fold-out | A frame and mattress unfold from inside the seat | Closest to a real bed | Regular or nightly sleeping |
| Storage diwan / trundle | The base lifts or a second platform pulls out | Single, sometimes two | Small flats where storage matters more |
Click-clack
The cheapest and the most common. The backrest hinges down until it is flush with the seat, giving you one continuous firm surface. It is quick, it takes no extra floor space, and there is little to go wrong mechanically.
The trade-off is comfort. You are sleeping on upholstery foam that was specified for sitting, not on a mattress. Fine for a guest for two nights. Not something to sleep on every night for a year.
Pull-out
A folding metal frame with an actual mattress lives inside the sofa and unfolds forward. This sleeps far better than click-clack because you are on a proper mattress, and it is the only type we would recommend to anyone sleeping on it nightly.
Two things to check. First, it needs clear floor space in front — measure it, because a pull-out that cannot open in your room is useless. Second, the frame is the failure point. Ask whether the mechanism is replaceable, and open and close it yourself in the shop, twice.
Storage diwan
Less a convertible, more a single bed that behaves like seating. The base lifts on struts or a second platform pulls out from below. It wins on storage, which in a Hyderabad flat is often worth more than the sleeping comfort. Related thinking in our storage and wardrobes options.
What actually drives the price
The gap between a cheap sofa cum bed and a good one is almost entirely in parts you cannot see on a product page.
| What changes the price | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mechanism type and grade | Click-clack is cheapest; a good pull-out frame costs real money and is what fails first |
| Frame timber | Seasoned hardwood versus engineered board — decides whether joints loosen after a monsoon |
| Foam density | Low-density foam collapses at the fold line within a year or two |
| Mattress (pull-out only) | A thin pad versus a real mattress is most of the comfort difference |
| Size | Single, double or L-shaped with a chaise |
| Upholstery | Fabric grade, or leather; also decides how it ages in humidity |
Because we build to order rather than stock finished units, we quote against your size, mechanism and fabric instead of a shelf price. Message us with the room dimensions and how often it will actually be slept on, and you will get a real number.
What fails first
In our experience repairing them, the order is fairly predictable.
- The mechanism. Hinges, gas struts and folding frames take the whole load every time it converts. Cheap hardware fails in months, and if it is not a replaceable part the whole piece is scrap.
- Foam at the fold line. The foam is bent at the same crease every single time. Low-density foam develops a permanent dip exactly where your hips go.
- The frame joints. A convertible is stressed in ways a normal sofa is not. Unseasoned timber loosens, and then it creaks every time you move.
- The upholstery at the fold. Fabric abrades where it folds. Leatherette is the worst option here — the coating cracks along the crease. We cover why in our guide to materials for Hyderabad's humid weather.
Sizing it for an Indian flat
Two measurements, not one. Measure the sofa footprint, then measure again with the bed open — including the clear floor you need in front of a pull-out.
- 1BHK, sleeping on it nightly: a double pull-out, and treat it as a bed that happens to fold away.
- 2BHK guest room: click-clack or a storage diwan is plenty for occasional use.
- Living room, guests a few times a year: buy the best sofa you can, not the best bed. You will sit on it a thousand times for every night anyone sleeps on it.
That last point is the one people get wrong most often. The clearance arithmetic in our bed size guide applies here too.
When a sofa cum bed is the wrong answer
Honestly: if guests stay twice a year, a good sofa plus a folding mattress in a cupboard will cost less, sit better and last longer than any convertible. A sofa cum bed earns its compromises only when the second function gets real use.
Why buying from a manufacturer changes this
Every one of the decisions above — mechanism, timber, foam density, mattress, size — is something you specify rather than accept. We build at our own factory in Cherlapalli, so you can come and open the mechanism before it is upholstered and see the frame it is bolted to.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it spelled sofa cum bed or sofa come bed?
"Sofa cum bed" is the correct form — cum is Latin for "combined with". "Sofa come bed" and "sofa kam bed" are phonetic spellings of the same product, and in India far more people type those.
Which sofa cum bed mechanism is best?
A pull-out if anyone sleeps on it regularly, because you get a real mattress. Click-clack if it is for occasional guests and you want to spend less. A storage diwan if under-bed storage matters more than sleeping comfort.
Can you sleep on a sofa cum bed every night?
On a good pull-out with a proper mattress, yes. On a click-clack, no — you are sleeping on seat foam, and both your back and the foam will object within a few months.
What is the difference between a sofa cum bed and a diwan?
A sofa cum bed converts between two configurations. A diwan is a fixed single daybed that does not convert — it is simply used as seating by day.
How much does a sofa cum bed cost in India?
It depends almost entirely on the mechanism, the frame timber and the foam, which is why the range is so wide. Ignore the headline price and ask what mechanism is fitted and whether it can be replaced — that single question separates a three-year piece from a fifteen-year one.
Can I get one made to my room size?
Yes. Because we manufacture, the dimensions, mechanism, fabric and foam are all yours to choose. Send your room measurements and how often it will be slept on.
