Start with the first confusion: in India, a "5 seater sofa" is almost never one sofa. It is a 3+2 set — a three-seater and a two-seater sold together. If you are shopping for a single five-seat piece, what you actually want is an L-shape.
The second thing worth knowing is that seat count is the wrong number to shop by. Wall length decides what fits. We build these in Cherlapalli, so here is how the sizes really work.
What the seater numbers mean here
| Sold as | What you actually get | Pieces |
|---|---|---|
| 2 seater | One small sofa, often called a loveseat | 1 |
| 3 seater | One standard sofa | 1 |
| 5 seater | Usually a 3+2 set — two separate sofas | 2 |
| 5 seater (alternative) | 3+1+1 — a sofa and two armchairs | 3 |
| 6 seater | 3+2+1, or an L-shape | 2-3 |
| L-shape / corner | One continuous piece, 4-6 seats | 1 |
This matters beyond vocabulary. A 3+2 set needs two walls, not one. People measure the long wall, find a 5-seater "fits", and then discover the second sofa has nowhere to go. It also catches people out when buying covers — a "5 seater cover" is usually two covers, which we cover in the sofa cover sizing guide.
Typical sizes
| Size | Typical width | In centimetres | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 seater / armchair | 30-40 in | 76-102 cm | 32-38 in |
| 2 seater | 48-60 in | 122-152 cm | 32-38 in |
| 3 seater | 72-84 in | 183-213 cm | 32-38 in |
| L-shape, long side | 84-110 in | 213-280 cm | 60-70 in on the chaise |
There is no Indian standard, so these are ranges rather than rules — which is precisely why the label alone cannot tell you whether something fits.
The 60 cm test
Each person needs about 60 cm (24 in) of seat width to sit without touching shoulders. So a three-seater at 72 in is really three people at 24 in each — technically three, practically two adults and a child. At 84 in you get three adults who are comfortable.
Apply it before you buy: divide the seat width by 60 cm. That is the honest seat count, whatever the label says.
Wall length is the real constraint
A sofa should not fill its wall edge to edge. Leave about 30 cm (1 ft) of breathing space at each end, or the room reads as cramped however well the sofa fits.
So: sofa width + 60 cm = minimum wall length.
| Wall length | What works |
|---|---|
| Under 7 ft | 2 seater, or an armchair pair |
| 7-8 ft | 2 seater comfortably |
| 8-9 ft | Compact 3 seater (72 in) |
| 9-11 ft | Full 3 seater (84 in) |
| 11 ft and up | 3 seater plus a side table, or an L-shape |
Depth eats rooms faster than width
Width is what everyone measures. Depth is what makes a room feel small.
A standard sofa is 32-38 in (81-97 cm) deep. Deep-seated lounge sofas run to 40 in and more — lovely to sink into, and they project a foot further into a room that may not have a foot to spare. In a 10 x 12 ft living room, that extra depth is the difference between a walkway and a squeeze.
You also need 75-90 cm of clear floor in front of the sofa to walk past comfortably, and 40-45 cm between the sofa and the coffee table — close enough to reach a cup, far enough to get your legs out. The same clearance thinking as our bed size guide.
3+2, 3+1+1 or L-shape?
| Layout | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 3+2 set | Square rooms with two usable walls | Needs both walls; harder to rearrange |
| 3+1+1 | Conversation; flexible seating | Armchairs take more floor per seat |
| L-shape | Long or open-plan rooms; most seats per foot | Fixed handing — left or right facing |
| Single 3 seater | Small rooms, 1BHK | Seats three, no more |
The L-shape detail that catches people: handing is permanent. Standing in front of it, if the long chaise is on your left it is left-facing. Get it wrong and the sofa blocks a doorway. Measure, then decide, then order — see the L-shaped range.
Small flats: what actually works
- 1BHK: one compact 3 seater at 72 in, standard depth. Skip the second sofa; add a light armchair you can move.
- 2BHK: a 3+2 only if you genuinely have two walls. Otherwise a 3 seater plus one armchair gives you four seats and a usable floor.
- Open plan: an L-shape works hard here — it seats more and its back doubles as a soft divider between living and dining, the same trick a curved sofa pulls off.
- Choose legs over a plinth. A sofa raised on legs shows floor underneath and reads lighter. A solid base to the floor makes the same footprint feel heavier.
When the standard sizes do not fit
This is the gap most people run into. Your wall is 9 ft 6 in. A 72 in sofa leaves awkward space; an 84 in is 2 in too tight once you want breathing room. No retailer stocks 78 in.
Because we manufacture, width, depth, seat height and arm style are specified to your room rather than picked from a catalogue — the same workshop also produces our Mavensoft range. Send the wall length and where the doors and windows fall, and we will work back from the clearance.
See the sofa range, custom options, or what goes into the frame on our materials and specifications page. The workshop is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 19:30 — plan a visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard size of a 3 seater sofa?
Typically 72 to 84 inches wide (183-213 cm) and 32 to 38 inches deep. At 72 in you get three tight seats; at 84 in, three comfortable ones.
Is a 5 seater sofa one sofa or two?
In India it is almost always a 3+2 set — two separate sofas. A single five-seat piece is normally sold as an L-shape or corner sofa.
What size room do I need for a 3 seater sofa?
A wall of at least 9 ft for a full-size 84 in sofa, allowing about a foot of breathing space at each end. A compact 72 in version works on an 8 ft wall.
How much space does each person need on a sofa?
About 60 cm (24 in) of seat width. Divide the seat width by 60 cm to get the honest seat count, regardless of what the label claims.
Is an L-shape better than a 3+2 set?
In a long or open-plan room, usually yes — more seats per foot and only one wall needed. In a square room with two good walls, a 3+2 is more flexible.
How much gap should there be between a sofa and a coffee table?
40 to 45 cm. Closer and you cannot get your legs out; further and you cannot reach your cup.
Can I get a sofa made to my wall length?
Yes. Send the wall measurement and the positions of doors and windows, and we will build to it rather than to a standard size.
